The Journey to Becoming an Operator
Whether you have already applied to become an operator, or are considering applying, it helps to know what comes next.
Information and Testing Session
If your PA CareerLink questionnaire and/or resume reflects you might be qualified for a position as an operator, you will be contacted by phone to attend a testing session.
The session will last for approximately three hours and consist of a three-part test. The validated test is used to identify candidates whose skills and abilities match our requirements.
If you do not pass the testing session, you can re-test one year from the test date.
Review of Application for Employment
All applicants who receive a passing score in the testing portion will be sent an application for employment. Please return the application by the provided deadline.
Applications are reviewed and information verified for work experience, education and driving history.
Any falsification on an application will disqualify you for an operator position, as well as any future employment opportunities with us.
Application Tips
Be sure to read and follow the instructions in the letter that is sent with the application. Fill out the application completely and pay attention to the following areas:
∙ Employment history - Take the time gather and provide information for ALL employers in the last five years. Include the name of the organization, address, a valid contact phone number and accurate dates of employment.
∙ Driving history - Include any loss of driver's license privileges, including DUI and suspensions. If you have any points on your license, you will need to verify the number of points. If you've had an accident within the last three years, we will need proof you were not at fault (police report, letter from your insurance carrier, etc.).
Please disclose all information that is requested on the application.
Interviews
Successful applicants will be contacted by phone and scheduled for an individual interview. There is no estimated time associated with this step. You will be contacted based on hiring needs and the order we received your completed application.
When you report for the interview, you will need to bring proof of education level.
Also, please let us know if your address or phone number has changed and needs to be updated.
The interviewing process takes approximately one hour.
Operators are required to have Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33). The form to apply for clearance will be given to applicants at the interview.
Getting the Job Offer
Interviewees selected for the operator position will have their name placed in a candidate pool for training class and will be contacted when a training class is scheduled (based on staffing needs).
The job offer for a student operator training class is contingent upon a satisfactory background check, PA Child Abuse History Clearance, pre-employment physical and drug screening, and receiving a commercial driver's license (CDL) permit.
Training Process
The final phase of the process involves skill-specific training. The 10-week program includes CDL training and testing, as well as classroom instruction for related knowledge and skills required for success on the job. Operator trainees are also given training on the routes at the location where they are assigned, and daily evaluation of driving skills.
You will be provided with your full training schedule on the first day of training. Training classes typically meet for eight hours a day.
Those who successfully complete the 10-week training program begin employment as a probationary employee for the first 90 working days of employment.
