Mon Incline Rehabilitation Project

This rehabilitation project will include upgrades to the mechanical, control, and electrical systems, upgraded lighting, and improvements to the interior and exterior of the upper and lower stations.

Scope of Work

• General Construction Contract:​

  • Structural Work to include gabion replacement, rock stabilization, rail repair, concrete repair, drainage work and rail painting.​

  • Drive sheave replacement includes work to fabricate and replace the drive sheaves for the incline.​

  • Architectural Work to include tile replacement, painting, refinishing existing wood trim, door and window replacement, sloped roof replacement with standing seam metal roof, low slope roof single ply membrane roof replacement, and new decorative railings.​ Glass flooring will be installed in the Upper Station waiting area that will allow the public to view the innerworkings of the Incline.

• HVAC Construction Contract:​

  • HVAC Work includes exhaust fan installation and controls, actuator and controls replacement, and duct modifications.​

• Electrical Construction Contract:​

  • Instrumentation and Controls work to include new SCADA and controls systems, new incline door signals and operators, new proximity switches, new E-Stop system, new operator workstation, and vehicle power systems upgrades.​

  • Electrical Work to include service upgrades, new power distribution, new generator, UPS, and incline track lighting replacement.​

Additional Project Details

• Contractor received Notice to Proceed on January 27, 2022

• The Mon Incline is scheduled to be out of service from August 1 through November 11, 2022 

  UPDATE: Supply chain and delivery issues have delayed the completion of the project. The incline is now expected to reopen by the end of 2022.

• Contract stipulates work should be completed at least one week prior to Light Up Night and includes a bonus for early completion.

• Contract work hours are unrestricted in order for the contractor to complete the work as they see fit within the above timeframe

• One lane of McArdle will need be closed for a portion of the project to allow for painting of the bridge.

• One lane of East Carson Street will be closed for a portion of the project to allow for scaffolding installation for lower station roof replacement.

PRT’s contractors will be working up to seven days a week in different areas of the Incline on alternating shifts. Depending on the task, weather, and coordination of the contractor crews, some work may occur at night. However, if that does occur, the bulk of that work will be on the interior of the stations which should limit the impact on the surrounding community. The contractors will abide by the City of Pittsburgh’s noise ordinance for any work happening overnight.

SHUTTLE BUS SERVICE

Shuttle buses will operate from 5:30 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. on weekdays and Saturdays and from 8:30 a.m. to midnight on Sundays

The first trip will leave the upper station of the Mon Incline at 5:30 a.m.

The shuttle will then run every 30 minutes

The last trip will leave Station Square at 12:30 a.m.

SUNDAYS

The first trip will leave the upper station at 8:30 a.m.

The shuttle will then run every 30 minutes

The last trip will leave Station Square at midnight

Frequency of service may be impacted by availability of operators.

SHUTTLE BUS ROUTE

The Wabash Tunnel will be open in the outbound direction for the duration of the project to accommodate shuttle buses.
